The Next Great Solar Eclipse Can Be Seen on a Cruise Ship
The next Great Solar Eclipse will happen on April 20th, 2023. The best place to see it, unfortunately (or fortunately, for some people – depending on how much you enjoy traveling), will be East Timor, Indonesia, and the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia. That said, watching it from the water on a cruise ship is the best option.
A 10-Day Cruise Journey!
Science publication chartered a second vessel to transport tourists and see the solar eclipse as part of its tour offerings after the Australian solar eclipse cruise sold out. This time, the ship is sailing through Indonesia rather than along the Australian coast. The Ombak Putih, known as a ‘pinisi,’ which is a traditional Indonesian cruise ship, will be used for the 10-day journey. Only 22 guests will be accommodated on board for the trip. The Great Solar Eclipse, which happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the sun’s light over a region of our planet for about 70 seconds, will steal the whole show.
Dolphins, Turtles, and More!
The cruise trip also involves experiencing local culture, as well as seeing some of the wildlife that Indonesia’s eastern islands offer. Visitors will be taught the art of ikat. It’s a method of fabric dyeing in Larantuca, by the local Lamaholot craftspeople. They will also meet the semi-nomadic Bajau in Wuring, who build their stilted homes on coral rocks. Visitors to Sika will try to spot docile dugongs, a manatee relative. Guests can also go swimming, snorkeling, and even see turtles, dolphins, and pilot whales throughout this awesome adventure.
The cost for the whole cruise trip is not on the affordable end. It’s $7,500 per person for a 10-day adventure. On April 8th, 2024, there will be another eclipse that will be much closer to home, so get ready for a road trip if you can’t afford to make it on this one.
